India on Friday said that it is committed in protecting the climate and environment irrespective of the international deals.

"Paris or no Paris, our commitment to preserving the climate is for the sake of future generations," Prime Minister Modi said at St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had commented hours after US President Donald Trump's exit from Paris agreement on climate change.

The Prime Minister said India had been working to protect the environment even before 190 countries had agreed to sign the Paris deal in 2015.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi iterated the same message in Saint Petersburg on Friday and also pointed out that India has been investing billions of dollars in clean energy infrastructure to cut down on emissions and reduce its carbon footprint.

The major polluters include China and the United States which ranks first and second in the list of biggest polluters accounting for 40 percent of the worlds emissions. India is ranked third with 4.1 percent of global emissions.
